Gayle Blackie web Artist Statement

As an accomplished technician in the medium of watercolor, I realized it took more than craft and artistic skills to produce truly inspired works of art. Artistry entered my work after a Kahuna introduced me to the “Haw,” a Hawaiian word meaning, breath of life, the soul, the Fifth Element so to speak. My “Haw” is that moment when creative process, skill, inspiration and emotion come together as art. It is this process rather than the product I seek, the experience where time stops, and the painting is driven solely by clear understanding of subject, craft, and creativity.

Rather than be a reporter of what I see, I work to interpret the essence of the scene in a style I describe as “conceptual realism”. I seek an active relationship between artist and viewer by creating mystery with lost and found edges allowing the viewer an opportunity to sue their imagination. With fine detail and refined brush work, I invite the viewer to move closer to the piece to enjoy the beautiful subtleties offered by the fluid nature of transparent watercolor. To me a successful work must exhibit the intrigue and complexity to spark the viewers curiosity and hold their interest over time.

I can’t imagine anything in life that could make me happier than my romance with watercolor painting. I feel fortunate that I discovered my calling and thrilled that I can share it with you.

My inspiration springs from the challenge of interpreting nature with the spontaneous and fluid medium of transparent watercolor. I paint in a traditional style using large brushes with bold, fast, wet-n-wet strokes delivered in an “alla prima” style.

Gayle teaching web Artist Process

I prefer to work in the studio, even though I use the same techniques as when painting on location. My subjects are taken from my sketch book journals. These sketches and photos, along with written descriptions, short poems, and narratives of the scene combined, jog my memory bringing the moment of inspiration back to life. To maintain my emotional connection with the subject I work one painting at a time completing as much of the painting as possible in the first wash. I work with the full range of value using the paper as my whites. This approach makes it necessary to plan every detail of the watercolor before applying paint. Relying on my detailed sketch as my reference, I draw only enough lines on the paper to mark the placement of key large shapes, whites, and architectural details.

I paint standing to have the range of motion necessary to dance the paint onto the paper. My brush strokes and color changes are driven by rhythms and beat of selected the music. Guided by artistic intuition, I make adjustments to edges and values as I paint in order to coax my will onto a medium that has a mind of it’s own. Great care is taken at the final stages of completion to convey the original concept to the viewer while not overworking or destroying the beautiful spontaneous freshness of the watercolor.
