The Best of Watercolor

The Splash series showcases the finest watercolor paintings being created today. A new book in the series is published every other year by North Light Books (an imprint of F+W Media) and features nearly 140 paintings by a wide variety of artists from around the world, each with instructive information about how it was achieved — including inspiration, tips and techniques.

Gayle Weisfield’s painting “Oak Stand” is featured in Splash 11: “New Directions” which came out in June 2010.  This is the narrative excerpt included with Gayle’s work in the book;

“Oak Stand” painted from my studio window uses stark contrasts filled with rich darks and textures to create maximum impact. A transparent wash of a primary triad is splashed, then rocked onto a saturated stretched paper, mixing to a luminous atmospheric glow producing interesting whites and color harmony. This becomes the “Haw” of my painting.  A Kahuna taught me this Hawaiian word meaning the “breath of life”. Discovering this “new direction” helps me see beyond my subjects and find the emotional connection that makes my painting speak. My “haw” is the moment when skill, inspiration, and emotion come together as art. This is a magical experience where time stops and the painting is driven solely by the clear understanding of subject, craft, and creativity, Fabulous!
